Spain, Beyond Rioja
Diversity, landscape and regional identity
Spain is often most closely associated with Rioja, its most recognized wine region, known for Tempranillo-based wines shaped by oak aging, structure, and tradition. For many, this style has come to define Spanish wine.
Beyond Rioja, however, Spain’s landscape opens into a wide range of regions with very different growing conditions and expressions.
In northwestern Spain, Bierzo sits at the meeting point of mountain and valley. Its higher elevations and slate-rich soils create ideal conditions for wine growing, helping grapes retain acidity while developing depth and character. The result is wines that feel more lifted and less structured than those traditionally associated with Rioja.
Mencía thrives here. Once overlooked, it is now recognized for producing elegant, medium-bodied reds with bright red fruit, subtle earth, and naturally high acidity. Often compared to Pinot Noir, Mencía shares a similar lift and delicacy, though it tends to show a slightly more rustic edge and mineral backbone.
Along Spain’s northeastern coast, Penedès offers yet another contrast. Shaped by Mediterranean influence and limestone soils, it produces wines with high acidity, moderate body, and a strong sense of balance, with less emphasis on oak and more focus on purity of fruit and site.
Best known as the backbone of Spain’s sparkling wine Cava, Xarel·lo also shines on its own. It produces wines with medium body, notable acidity, and a mineral backbone derived from limestone soils. Often compared to Chardonnay, it carries a similar weight on the palate, but with a more savoury edge and a distinctly fresh finish.
Together, these wines highlight a broader view of Spain — one defined not only by tradition, but by diversity, landscape, and regional identity.
This month’s wine selections
Parés Baltà Calcaris & Bodegas Estefanía Pagos de Posada
Two wines from two very different corners of Spain — a mineral-driven white from the Mediterranean coast and a lifted, elegant red from the mountains of the northwest.
White · Penedès
Parés Baltà Calcaris
Parés Baltà is a family-owned estate in Penedès with roots dating back to the 18th century, now run by the Cusiné family with a strong focus on organic and biodynamic farming. Their approach emphasizes respect for the land and a commitment to expressing site through minimal intervention.
Calcaris is made from 100% Xarel·lo, one of Spain’s most important native white grapes and the backbone of Cava. Grown in limestone-rich soils and fermented in stainless steel, this wine highlights Xarel·lo’s naturally high acidity, subtle texture, and mineral backbone, offering a focused and balanced expression of the grape.
Food pairing
Its bright acidity and mineral backbone make it a natural match for seafood, grilled fish, shellfish, fresh salads, and dishes with olive oil, citrus, or fresh herbs.
Red · Bierzo
Bodegas Estefanía Pagos de Posada
Bodegas Estefanía was founded in the late 20th century in Bierzo, a region that has quickly gained recognition for its distinctive wines and unique growing conditions. The winery focuses on expressing the character of the region through careful vineyard management and a respect for traditional varieties.
Pagos de Posada is made from Mencía, a grape that has become synonymous with Bierzo. Known for producing medium-bodied wines with bright red fruit, natural acidity, and a gentle structure, Mencía offers a more lifted and approachable style of red. This wine captures that balance, showing both freshness and depth in a way that reflects its origin.
Food pairing
Lovely alongside roast chicken, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, and softer cheeses — especially with a light chill.
